How to Position a Triple SMG Magazine Pouch on Your Chest Rig or Plate Carrier
Share
A triple SMG magazine pouch can carry substantial ammunition in a compact footprint, but only when it is positioned correctly. Mount it too low and it interferes with bending or prone shooting. Push it too far toward the firing side and it disrupts the rifle, sling, or pistol draw. Place it without weaving the attachment straps correctly and the pouch shifts every time you move.
Wilde Custom Gear’s triple CZ Scorpion and SIG MPX pouch carries three 30-round magazines in a space similar to two AR-15 magazines. Its compact size makes it well suited to the front of a chest rig or plate carrier, while adjustable shock cord and Malice Clips support a secure, repeatable setup.
Establish the Primary Reload Zone
For most right-handed shooters, the support hand retrieves magazines from the left or center-left portion of the torso. Left-handed shooters usually reverse the layout. The first magazine you expect to draw should sit where the support hand naturally lands without forcing the elbow outward or requiring you to look down.
Start with the triple pouch centered on the front panel. Load it fully, shoulder the firearm, and perform several slow reloads. Then shift the pouch one MOLLE column toward the support side and repeat. Choose the position that produces the shortest, cleanest movement while leaving room for your other equipment.
A 3 pack of sig mpx magazines adds meaningful weight to one area of the carrier, so balance matters. If the pouch sits too far to one side, the carrier may rotate or pull unevenly. A centered or slightly support-side position usually gives the best combination of balance and access.
Mount the Pouch High Enough
The bottom of the pouch should not hang below the plate carrier’s front panel or dig into the abdomen when you sit. Mounting it one row too low can interfere with bending at the waist, vehicle entry, and prone shooting. Position the pouch high enough that the magazines remain clear of the belt line while still allowing a full support-hand grip.
On a chest rig, adjust the harness so the rig rides high on the sternum. The pouch should move with the upper torso rather than bouncing against the stomach. Once the rig height is correct, fine-tune the pouch placement by one row or column at a time.
Weave the Malice Clips Correctly
Wilde Custom Gear includes Tactical Tailor Long Malice Clips for secure MOLLE attachment. Feed each clip through one row of the chest rig or carrier, then back through the pouch, continuing the weave until the clip locks. Do not simply pass the clip through the top and bottom rows. A complete weave pulls the pouch against the platform and prevents vertical movement.
After installation, grab the bottom corners and pull outward. The pouch should remain flush against the carrier. If it peels away, the clips were not woven through enough rows or the final lock was not fully engaged.
Set Magazine Orientation
Magazine orientation should support a consistent grip. Many shooters position all three magazines with the same side facing forward so the support hand can index them identically. Others orient the center magazine differently based on the way the MPX or Scorpion magazine enters the firearm. There is no universal answer, but there should be one repeatable answer for your setup.
Practice grasping each magazine with your eyes closed. Your fingers should find the same reference point every time. If the outer magazines require an awkward wrist angle, move the pouch slightly toward the support side or adjust the angle of your draw.
Tune Retention After Placement
Do not set cord tension before mounting the pouch. The carrier can compress the pouch body and change how tightly it holds the magazines. Complete the shock cord retention adjustment after the pouch is woven into its final position and loaded with the magazines you intend to carry.
Tighten each cell gradually. Turn the carrier upside down over a safe surface and shake it lightly. The magazines should stay seated. Then shoulder the carrier and perform deliberate draws. If a magazine requires you to brace the pouch with the other hand, loosen that cell slightly.
Keep the Draw Path Clear
The magazine opening must remain free from overlapping gear. Avoid mounting a large admin pouch, cable bundle, hydration tube, or sling buckle directly aboe the triple pouch. Even soft equipment can catch a pull tab or block your fingers when speed matters.
When choosing the right mag pouch for the CZ Scorpion, consider the entire front panel, not only the magazine capacity. The Wilde triple pouch’s compact footprint preserves neighboring MOLLE columns, which makes it easier to place a small admin pouch or medical item without covering the magazines.
Check Compatibility With Other Equipment
Test the setup with your normal sling, belt, sidearm, radio, and protective equipment. A pouch that works on an empty carrier may interfere with the buttstock once the sling is installed. Magazine pull tabs may catch under a chest-mounted admin pouch. A belt-mounted medical kit may collide with a low-hanging chest rig.
Run through these checks:
- Shoulder the firearm on both sides
- Transition from rifle to pistol
- Sit in a chair or vehicle seat
- Kneel and go prone
- Reach every magazine with either hand
- Confirm the pouch does not obstruct the carrier buckle or cummerbund
Train From Every Magazine Cell
Shooters often practice from the easiest magazine and ignore the other two. Build drills that rotate through the center, left, and right cells. This verifies that every position is accessible and helps you establish an order for ammunition management.
A simple sequence is to draw from the support-side cell first, move to the center, and use the far cell last. Another option is to use the center as the primary reload because it is easiest to locate under stress. The correct order depends on your body mechanics and the rest of the loadout.
Position the Pouch for Your Body and Mission
The best position is usually centered or slightly toward the support side, mounted high enough to preserve mobility and woven tightly enough to eliminate movement. Use the exact magazines you carry, tune retention after mounting, and test the setup under realistic conditions. A properly positioned Wilde Custom Gear triple SMG pouch keeps three magazines secure without turning the front of the carrier into a bulky, difficult-to-use platform.
